call it in
I tend to always want to stay in and around East Nashville, and it definitely offers some points of interest you won’t find anywhere else. I’m positive there are more bearded hipsters that live in this neighborhood then you’d find in Brooklyn, no doubt. I’m also positive you’d be hard pressed to find another biscuit destination that also offers drive thru service - that’s why I am such a big fan of Nashville Biscuit House. This is definitely an experience, something I’d describe being along the lines of old chic diner hometown eatery.
If you head out to this perfect spot [I mean, Biscuit is in the title], you want to be aware of a few things. First, if you are heading over for a Sunday Brunch hour, get in line. Yes, I said LINE. It’s not unusual for that after-church crowd to find themselves signing up for a 45 minute wait. NBH has a smaller dining area inside, with smaller tables and a hot kitchen that’s going non-stop. It definitely has the diner vibe, but one that feels like you sat down at your southern grandma’s table.
The ladies who keep the line moving and the kitchen pumping are exactly what you’d expect and they’ll bring you anything you could or shouldn’t order, on menu or with extras added at cost. The menu does include lunch options, but the star here is what the House refers to as the Breakfast Nook menu. Included are tons of options for biscuits, eggs, meats, grits and more.
I’ve been to the Biscuit House several times, but I only waited in line once. After all, why wait when there’s a drive thru? So if you would rather enjoy a perfect breakfast on your own couch, call them up, order and pickup usually in around 15 minutes. This also serves to solve the liquor problem - NBH is more of a family-friendly venue, and the heaviest beverage they serve is the chocolate milk, which BTW, is stellar. Hit up the drive thru and then pick up your own OJ and champagne, a crisp riesling, or belgian beer - all work perfectly with an all American breakfast.
When I call up the Biscuit House, my boy and I can’t help but order the stereotypical East Nashvillian order - we both ask for The Lumberjack. This ironic selection means we get our choice of pancakes or french toast, eggs, bacon AND sausage, home fries or grits, and toast or biscuit. For even more awesomeness, you can substitute one of the following: country ham, pork chop, ribeye steak or country friend steak. It’s like I traveled back in time to my Texan grandma’s house. Of course, we haven’t even covered the options for country or sausage gravy, smothering your home fries in cheese, gravy and eggs, adding blueberries, pecans or chocolate chips to your pancakes - i mean, you get the picture.
I stay pretty traditional - my order is simply the french toast, eggs, the meats, home fries and OF COURSE biscuits. It’s a lot. The after-brunch coma usually keeps me feeling happy and satisfied for most of the rest of the day.
This place covers a few of my essential needs - it’s got some pretty good biscuits at a good price; it’s convenient and the people make you feel at home. Two Lumberjacks come in at $19, leaving plenty of room in the budget for drink options at home, or let’s you go big or go home with chocolate milks. It gets a solid Passion Pit’s 2012 album Gossamer from me for it’s all around good feeling.
