feel the love

feel the love

Yes, yes - I can hear you already. I know The Gulch is full of way too trendy, too pretty, too-much-money-at-that-age kind of people. But, alas, there is a beacon of biscuit love to be found. In fact, it’s even got that in the name - Biscuit Love.

It’s odd to go to a food spot that has the same name I would like to use for my memoirs, but how could I not? Biscuit Love offers some of the best in town, and hence, is why I opted for that spot when I heard my ma and pa were headed into Nashvegas. They are from the Lone Star state, so southern food is a must. Biscuits and Gravy, western omelettes, you name it, we need it for the senior Sturgeons.

Biscuit Love was started by Nashville native Karl Worley after he realized the hearty southern fare he had been serving out of a picture perfect silver airstream food truck was in desperate need of a home. The menu preaches about his eastern Tennessee upbringing, and some quirky items were included, including a flight of local hams specifically curated just for this hopping hotspot. If it’s your first time, you should know that the ordering works just like a coffeeshop - walk in, grab the menu that’s in the wall bin at the door, get it together, then order at the desk. Once you’ve done the hard part, you get a number and grab a seat to await all the goodness.

You know me, and if you know the menu at Biscuit Love, you know I ordered the East Nasty. It’s not just because of my intense East Nashville pride, but it’s because this dish puts the spotlight square on the love of my life, the perfect southern biscuit. This biscuit is topped with cheese, a nice cut of chicken and some lush sausage gravy. My boo bear and I both love this homage to everything right in the world, but my pops just wasn’t ready for it. To give him something a little more to his liking, we got him the Southern Benny, the dirty south eggs Benedict. This pile of goodness is another great biscuit, thick country ham, two eggs over easy and some more sausage gravy.

I must take a moment to comment on a very specific delight one can find at only Biscuit Love - for now, as I’m sure there are counterfeiters starting up as I write - and that is the perfection of the Bonut. For those unaware, the Bonut is a donut made out of a biscuit. Here, the biscuit dough is fried, sprinkled with sugar, filled with lemon mascarpone and placed in a dish of blueberry compote. It’s awe-inspiring, it’s a must.

Biscuit Love sources an astonishing amount of their ingredients, from flour to meat, from local providers. It comes as no surprise that the reason their mimosas are worth the wait are because the orange juice is freshly squeezed as you order it. If you are driving order just the OJ … if you aren’t, drink the DD’s champagne. You are all welcome.

One word of caution, which I suppose is worth stating in each entry, is that the line for Sunday Brunch can stretch for quite the distance. My first trip to BL was of the after-church variety and I waited 9 people down, outside the door. For my second trip, with my moms and pops, I knew we’d be safe on a Wednesday morning, and we were in, ordered and sitting in minutes.

For serving up good food worth the $$, for the creativity of the Bonut, and for the perfect place to have my senior citizen parents experience why I love brunch so much, Biscuit Love has won the coveted Love Story by Taylor Swift. It may not be good for you, but man does it warm your heart and soul.
